Stan Tracey has occupied a very special place at the heart of jazz in this country since the early 1960s when his landmark Under Milk Wood suite marked the emergence of a uniquely British response to the African-American traditions of the music. Now in his 81st year, Tracey's piano style, with its echoes of Ellington and Monk, is witty and absorbing yet remains completely original.
